We’re constantly being told to drink more water. In fact, we hear it so often that it’s easy for this suggestion to go in one ear and out the other. But no matter how much we may choose to dismiss it, the truth is that drinking water really does benefit us in many important ways. It not only helps our bodies work better and feel better, but it can even help us look better!
Here are just a few ways in which staying hydrated can benefit you:
• Water is a natural headache preventer. Some headaches are a result of dehydration. When this happens, drinking two to four cups of water can help relieve your headache within an hour or two.
• Water helps your body remove waste and helps to stabilise blood pressure. This is because water helps keep your kidneys in good working order so that they can flush waste properly and help control your blood pressure.
• Drinking water helps improve concentration, attention span and helps memory. Water keeps you refreshed, hydrated and focused. It can be just what you need if you’re trying to study or work for long periods of time!
• Water helps deliver oxygen to different parts of the body – a process which is crucial to both survival, and helping your body to perform at its best.
• Drinking water promotes weight loss by speeding up your metabolism.
• Water is an immune system booster. Regular and generous drinking of water helps fight the flu and other illnesses.
• Drinking water helps reduce chances of joint pain, cramps and muscular strains by lubricating your joints and making your muscles more elastic. During exercise, drinking water helps to replace the fluids lost in your sweat. This water also helps to energise your tired muscles – helping you to keep going for longer.
• Drinking water can help your skin look firmer, softer and younger. When your body needs water, your skin will appear dry and more wrinkled than when it is properly hydrated.
How much water should I be drinking each day?
The amount of water a person generally needs varies according to age, gender and body weight. Adult males usually need three litres and adult females need about 2.2 litres. A good rule of thumb to apply is to drink a litre for every 30 kilograms.
Simple tips to help you stay hydrated
• Drink a glass of water with each snack or meal you have.
• If you find it difficult to drink water because you don’t like the taste, you can drink other beverages as a means to stay hydrated. A great way of training yourself to drink water might be to drink flavoured or sparkling water for a while. Once you’re used to drinking these, you can try to drink more plain water.
• All your water doesn’t need to come from beverages. You can make sure you give your body the water it needs by eating more fruits and vegetables, too.
• Keep a bottle of water with you at work, home or school. You can sip on it and fill it up throughout the day.
